Batten down the hatches! A rollicking band of pirates has landed on the rocky shores of Arlington with Encore Stage & Studio’s summer production of The Pirates of Penzance. Come see the lads who plough the sea or prepare to walk the plank!
Handsome young Frederic has just finished an apprenticeship with a band of silly pirates. When he falls in love with the beautiful Mabel Stanley, however, he discovers that he must stay with the pirates until his 21st birthday—but he was born on Leap Day! This classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical, the first ever produced by Encore, features plenty of swashbuckling and is sure to delight the whole family!
This production runs July 19 through 29 at Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre, 125 S. Old Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia 22204 (near the intersection of Glebe Road and Arlington Boulevard/Route 50).
Recommended for ages 6 and up. Adults $15; Children, Students, and Seniors $10. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at www.encorestage.org. Group discounts are available.

| This year marks the 25th anniversary of The AIDS Memorial Quilt, as the world marks 30 years of AIDS. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is honored to host this unparalleled opportunity to experience this highly charged symbol of the AIDS crisis, and the largest community art project in the world. The display will be on exhibit from Saturday, July 21st through Wednesday, July 25th, with panels on exhibit in the main hall of the Art Center as well as outside on the dock. A special sneak-peek reception will be on Friday, July 20th from 6:30-8:30pm, and The Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS will host a closing reception on Wednesday, July 25th from 6-8pm, with Mayor William D. Euille serving as the honorary chair. |

Beginning June 1, the Artland Temporium project presented by Dance Place brings three months of free cultural events to Brookland’s Monroe Street area in northeast DC.
Artland is a 12 week public art celebration offering free cultural events and promoting creative expression. The events are housed in temporary art spaces (Temporiums), animating public areas and bringing to life two vacant storefronts in the Monroe Street NE area. The free cultural events include visual arts exhibits, dance performances, music concerts, dance parties, poetry readings, workshops and recreational games for all ages. Local crafts will be on sale and displayed in pop-up shops at the venues throughout the event.
Presented by Dance Place with guest curators from the DC creative community, Artland events will take place every weekend between June 1 and August 26, 2012 and are free to the public.
